First time I passed through Effingham, I was amazed at the number of old signs: The Ramada Inn, the Kmart, and the Pizza Hut, for instance, were still using old-style signage that I hadn’t seen in years elsewhere. In fact, I don’t think I’d ever seen this "Nationally Famous Restaurants" variation.

Two former Wichita State University students, Dan and Frank Carney, borrowed $600 from their mother to open this first Pizza Hut. Their corporation grew to become the world’s largest pizza chain and was sold to PepsiCo in 1977 for $300,000,000.

The Original Pizza Hut building was later relocated to the Wichita State University campus.
